I definitely want to see this trilogy in the future. Mad respect to Max Holloway for going to distance against Poirier who had the weight advantage in this fight. Poirier gassed himself out trying to finish Holloway in the first and Max "allowed" him to coast and recover in the second. In hindsight, had Holloway applied more pressure in the second round, the fight could’ve ended differently. If this fight went 5 more rounds, Holloway wins. Holloway was the fresher fighter at the end of the fight. The blood affected the judges scoring in this round. The knee landed by Dustin in the forth round just grazed Holloway and didn’t hurt him. Dustin was more accurate and damaging, which earned him the victory, but I disagree with the 49-46 score cards. Holloway landed 24 out of 85 (24%) significant strikes vs 26 out of 60 (43%) landed for Dustin. All three judges scored the round 10-9 Poirier - I disagree with them. 42 out of 89 (47%) strikes landed for Holloway vs 34 out of 64 (53%) for Dustin. Dustin shoots for another takedown, but Holloway stuffs it and attempts a darce choke with 2seconds left. The damage is superficial, Max is still pressuring Dustin and landing shots. Max Holloway is in control for the first 4 minutes of this round, but it’s pretty clear to me that Dustin is coasting and trying to recover. Poirier is visibly fatigued from trying to finish Holloway in the first round and Holloway looks pretty fresh. All three judges scored this round 10-9 Dustin. 54 significant strikes landed out of 115 (46%) for Dustin vs 30 out of 72 (41%) for Holloway. It’s very clear that Poirier is the bigger and stronger fighter. He landed the heavier punches and rocked Holloway on two occasions. Max landed a couple good combinaisons and counter strikes, but aside from that, Dustin dominated this round. The only reason I didn’t count this as 10-8 Poirier is because Max Holloway was intelligently defending himself and fighting back the whole time. I’ll try to keep this recap very concise: For some reason I thought Poirier won this fight pretty dominantly, but after reviewing the rematch, this fight was arguably tied going into the fifth round.
